Die-casting of rotors in Vicenza

Description: VMF is a company specialized in rotor die-casting in Vicenza and builds dedicated dies for the production of rotors for any application. The range of rotors varies from a diameter of 30 to 1200 mm and a height of up to 1500 mm.

What is die-casting

Die-casting is also called 'pressure casting' and is a permanent foundry process, with the molten metal injected thanks to high pressure into the metal mold. The process originated in the USA in the second half of the 1800s and has evolved over time to the present day.

The die casting mold is made from special steel both for the matrix and the pouch and the metals injected are aluminum and composites. The pressure varies from 600 to 1700 tonnes and is maintained throughout the process until the metal solidifies. The part is cooled by a liquid flowing through the mould and once complete, the two moulds are opened so that it can be removed.

Today, die-casting is a highly automated process that guarantees VMF high productivity, thanks also to the different range of dimension, tolerances and choice of die-casting circuit rings available. Die casting comprises two categories:

  • Hot chamber die casting, if the molten metal tank is placed in a oven
  • Cold chamber die casting, if the metal reservoir is a simple non-temperature-controlled cavity.
All VMF die-casting machines use cold chamber die-casting to achieve better quality results.

Die-casting of rotors in Vicenza: characteristics

Die-casting at VMF produces closed-circuit, squirrel-cage rotors, a company a company specialized in rotor die-casting in Vicenza. These rotors consist of magnetic laminations stacked vertically in which aluminum or aluminum alloys or copper are injected. This creates a series of bars repeated symmetrically through the slots and connected together by short-circuit rings of the same materials.

Today, companies such as VMF use aluminum squirrel-cage die-casting for motor rotors up to 50-200 kW. Rotor short-circuit rings can be accessorized with cooling fins and possible balancing pegs. For high-power motors or special applications, the rotor with copper bars or the insertion of magnets inside rotor slots is used.

Typical of rotors die-casting in Vicenza is the longitudinal inclination of the slots, which varies according to the “slot pitch”, a necessary feature to give inertia to the motor and avoid disturbances due to harmonic fields. Cage rotors are divided into various types depending on the cage configuration, but are united by the use of die-casting production technology. Contact us for more information!
